Less Copy, More Clicks: 9 Proven Ways to Improve Marketing Message Performance

By Jason Witt VP, Creative Innovation
Published on March 26, 2026

Attention is scarce. Performance is everything.

Marketers invest heavily in identity resolution, predictive intelligence, and real-time activation to reach the right consumers. But even the most sophisticated targeting can underperform if the message itself creates friction.

In permission-based channels like email, SMS, RCS, and push, you have already earned access. The subscriber opted in. The real challenge is not breaking through the noise but converting attention into action. That requires discipline.

Concise, value-driven messaging consistently outperforms bloated creative because it respects time, sharpens intent, and drives faster decisions. In our client’s campaigns across retail, financial services, and travel, Zeta’s Creative Studio team repeatedly sees that clarity increases click-through rates, reduces drop-off, and improves downstream conversion.

When real-time signals identify high-intent prospects, brevity becomes a force multiplier.

Here are nine practical ways to craft promotional messages that convert.

1. Understand that the goal is only to open the door

Most marketing messages are not the destination. Instead, they are only a gateway to the destination, whether it’s a landing page, app, call center conversation, or somewhere else beyond the inbox.

In that context, your message doesn’t need to tell the whole story. It only needs to contain enough of a teaser to convince the subscriber to click through to get more details. Save deeper content for the destination.

2. Answer these three questions before you begin

  • What is this message about?
  • Why should the subscriber care?
  • What should the subscriber do next?

If the message can’t clearly answer all three, your performance will suffer.

3. Start with a clear, value-focused subject line

The subject line should communicate intent immediately. Readers should understand what the message is about and why it matters before they open it. Cleverness only works if it reinforces clarity.

Use preview text to extend the value, not repeat it. Use it to answer the next logical question or introduce urgency. As AI-generated inbox summaries become more common and algorithms extract and summarize the message value, structural clarity matters even more.

4. Follow the Rule of One

Each message should deliver one clear idea supported by one primary call to action. When you try to sell, educate, announce, and cross-promote all at once, performance suffers because focus disappears. This discipline is especially critical in SMS, RCS, and push messaging.

For emails and other longer messages, if you want to include multiple CTAs, ensure your message has a clear hierarchy.

5. Optimize longer messages for scanning, not reading

While consumers typically read SMS, RCS, and push messages from start to end because they’re already short, they’re generally only scanning emails and other longer messages.

To make scanning easier:

  • Clearly define each message block in your email using intentional whitespace, line rules, and background color changes.
  • Establish a clear content hierarchy by having your primary message headline larger than those of any secondary message and having your largest image associated with your primary message.
  • Use visual anchors that guide the subscriber’s eye toward the action you want the reader to take, such as CTA buttons that stand out.

6. Keep body copy short and intentional

For SMS messages, staying under 40 words is optimal, keeping in mind that standard SMS messages have a 160-character limit. If your message exceeds that, then it becomes a multi-part message, which can double delivery costs, impacting ROI at scale.

For push messages, keep character counts at 60 or less so it’s compatible across iOS and Android.

For email messages, keep word counts under 300 (excluding legalese, disclaimers, and other footer copy), and use short paragraphs of no more than five lines.

Regardless of the channel, every sentence in your message should earn its place and support the core message, although you certainly should not always use full sentences.

7. Use microcopy instead of long explanations

Because subscribers often scan messages, full sentences aren’t always necessary. Keep your messages light and a quick read by using phrases for:

  • Headlines
  • Eyebrows above headlines
  • Bulleted lists
  • Captions
  • Call-to-action language for links and buttons

Short supporting lines near buttons and images can clarify intent without adding bulk.

8. Leverage animation and interactivity for space efficiency

Animation can be a powerful way to pack more into MMS, RCS, or email messages—whether you’re using it to show multiple products, display the same product in multiple colors or styles, or demonstrate how a product functions. Just don’t overuse them in emails, as animations can compete with each other for attention and become distracting.

Similar space efficiency is offered by interactive elements in email and RCS, such as image carousels, accordions, tabbed content, and hover states.

9. Design mobile first, always

SMS, RCS, and push messages are native to mobile, of course, but you should also treat email as fundamentally mobile, because most B2C emails are opened on mobile devices.

Even when using responsive design, you should always prioritize the mobile experience with a mobile-first approach, because if it requires excessive scrolling or entails dense reading, it’s typically going to underperform.

Every Marketing Interaction is a Micro-Commitment

If the subject line delivers value, the subscriber opens. If the body copy delivers clarity, they click. If the landing experience delivers relevance, they convert. At each step, friction erodes performance.

Brevity is not about saying less. It’s about making every word accountable to outcomes.

When concise messaging is powered by identity-based targeting, real-time behavioral signals, and AI-driven optimization, brands do more than improve engagement metrics. They drive measurable growth.

If you’re ready to turn sharper messaging into stronger acquisition and conversion performance across email, SMS, CTV, and paid media, request a demo and see how Zeta helps leading brands transform attention into revenue.
